Landau Orchestra | Bushwick Roof Party | May 26, 2007
If it weren’t for the laptop, turntables, and Rhodes, you might think it was jazz.
Though most of the musicians playing in The Landau Orchestra are highly-skilled and professionally-trained jazz musicians, the music (which they will only describe as “Electro-acoustic awesome!”) is something that can make a whole lot of sense to a roof full of Brooklyn hipsters on a long Memorial Day weekend.
Using an actual horn section instead of samples gives Landau a huge advantage over other electro-acoustic acts, providing an exciting live show that could even work without being plugged in. Saturday night there were moments before their set when it looked like that might have to happen – during opener Calmer’s ambient drone the power (from one outlet, apparently) cut out a few times. Luckily it held through Landau’s set – which was celebrating the release of their new record, Janus Plays Telephone (Milan).
