Willis Earl Beal has previously stated his desire to adapt his novella Priniciples of a Protagonist into a film. That plan has finally come to fruition with an animated short film from NOWNESS’ “Shorts On Sundays” project. Adding to his list of talents is the fact that the entire piece is hand-drawn and narrated by Beal himself. For six minutes Beal talks about the ideal principles a person should possess as the main character goes through everyday trials. The film has an immediate pull due to its interesting aesthetic, but has deeper meaning as you peel back the layers. Prior to this film Beal released an EP of the same name, and a lo-fi soul full-length, Acousmatic Sorcery, on XL.

Paired with the video is a statement from Beal:

The Protagonist does what we cannot. He embraces an inevitable destruction that is all inclusive. He knowingly constructs a set of principles that ultimately must dissolve within a meaningless void like the perceived order of life into the uncertainty of death.
