California rapper and Odd Future friend Vince Staples dropped his excellently hard-headed mixtape, Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2, last week. His rapping is huge on its own, but Staples goes even further by pinning his concrete flow to thoughts on politics, poverty and crime, using examples from his own troubled home life. Nate (featuring R&B singer James Fauntleroy) is one of the mixtape’s strongest cuts, with Staples tightly and unapologetically discussing how he admired his father’s criminal life only to be disillusioned by it. The video for the track, directed by Alexi Papalexopoulos, is an engrossing, difficult take on a similar scenario, filmed from the point of view of a young kid living in an uneasy environment.
