Sharon Van Etten writes songs that often play like miniature psycho-dramas with all the harrowing emotional intensity of a good horror movie, and now she’s set one of those songs to images that feel lifted right out of a Roman Polanski film. In this stirring clip for the Tramp highlight “Magic Chords,” Van Etten dresses in pilgrim garb and stands in a field that fills up with mysterious naked bodies as the song progresses. It only gets more unsettling from there. Watch the haunting Rick Alverson-directed clip, below.
Van Etten has been up to a lot more than just shooting creepy music videos. She also performed on Later…With Jools Holland last night, which you can view here, and has been hard at work on collaborations with J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. She’s also beginning another leg of an extensive North American tour on October 25. Hopefully the shows will be a little more uplifting than this video.
