Kendrick Lamar’s acclaimed 2012 album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, was often celebrated for its “cinematic” qualities—the record’s cover even described it as a “short film by Kendrick Lamar”—so it’s been fun to watch Lamar put visuals to his songs, matching his vivid, precise descriptions with actual images. Today, he released his most ambitious video yet, a beautiful clip for the Janet-Jackson-sampling track “Poetic Justice.”

Starting with a car slowly rolling across the pavement in front of a liquor store, the video has a fun, romantic tone toward the beginning, but things take a turn for the worse around the two-minute mark as the story gets violent. Drake even makes an appearance at one point, calling Lamar from a very Drake-ian hotel room complete with an almost-naked woman lying on the bed. Check it out below.
