Last week, James Brooks (formerly of Elite Gymnastics) released Stop Pretending, a 4-song EP under the moniker Dead Girlfriends. But now, the Brooklyn-based artist is ditching the controversial alias altogether for Default Genders, a tag that he thinks better suits the project.
Brooks, who is never one to hold his tongue, opens up about the name change on his Tumblr. He writes, “the name sort of had an effect i didn’t want” and “i apologize to anyone who’s inconvenienced by this but especially to anyone who was upset or offended or grossed out by the old name, and to the other band that was using the name first.”
He’s gotten a fresh start with the release of a video for the EP’s title track, “Stop Pretending.” Much like his earlier video for “On Fraternity,” the new clip is given a lyric treatment. There’s a psychedelic backdrop featuring a kitty, plants, and a lot of other randomness like Brooks eating yogurt with a blanket over his head. With riveting strings complementing his frank lyrics about the irony in pretension, Brooks holds nothing back: “You say you can’t be soft if you wanna be punk/Fine, cool, whatever, thanks for clearing that up,” he sings with just a hint of sarcasm.
