You know that scene in Wet Hot American Summer when Michael Showalter’s character learns about “The New Way” from Christopher Meloni’s character, and they run around in crop tops, doing sprints and testing their reflexes? That’s what this song reminds me of, except the montage is slowed down about 70 percent. Maybe it’s because the track is called Keep Your Heat, but it sounds like the kind of chin-up jammer you’d tone your calves to.
Keep Your Heat comes courtesy of Nashville’s Sol Cat, a six-piece that knows how to work their size. The track features Brett Hammann’s black-lung vocals leading a savvy bassline, snappy percussion and well-timed guitars. The break-down comes in the last minute, as the song speeds up and the guitars climb to the top of the noise pile. This is where you’d run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, if you happened to be close by.
Sol Cat has an EP, Welcome To Cowabunga, due out October 1. Check out our premiere of Keep Your Heat below, along with the band’s upcoming tour dates, which include a stop at CMJ Music Marathon.
