Tom Gabel, singer for Against Me!, has come out to Rolling Stone as transgender. The singer reported undergoing years of stress due to gender dysphoria, and that she will be changing her name to Laura Jane Grace, along with taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatment. She will remain married to her wife Heather, who has been “super-amazing and understanding,” Gabel said. Gabel’s full interview will be published in the upcoming May 11 issue of Rolling Stone.
In the last few months, Gabel started performing an acoustic track live addressing her gender identity, entitled “Transgender Dysphoria Blues.” We applaud Gabel for her bravery, which will hopefully set a precedent for more openness toward the transgendered community in the future. Gabel, too, wishes that “people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
