The hard rock guys of the Atlanta-based quartet Mastodon had a tough 2010: The band lost two close friends that year, including guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds’ brother. Rather than letting the resulting tensions spell the end for the group, Hinds and his cohorts channeled their raw energy into a new album. The Hunter, Mastodon’s fifth LP and what the band’s site calls its “most emotionally charged record to date,” comes out September 27 on Criminal and is available to stream below. Mastodon wrote the album while on the road with Alice In Chains and recruited hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (Eminem, 50 Cent) to add an expertly non-metal touch to the recordings.
