Stories about bands forming are usually similar—uninteresting, irrelevant and typically offer the same amount of excitement as hearing about how your parents met at a cotillion in the ’50s. But in the case of hip-hop group Clear Soul Forces, its story is one that demonstrates the power of four minds behind the music coming together. After the members met while playing various live shows as solo artists, Jarrel (Wimp), Emile (E-Fav), Jared (J Roc) and Kortez (Ilajide) all decided to put some money together to record in a studio around their hometown Detroit. In the studio that day was Detroit’s own Royce Da 5’9″ who pointed out each the four lyricists’ strong points and their overall cohesiveness as a single group, a compliment none of them had planned for. Then and there, Clear Soul Forces was born.

Clear Soul Forces claims the group’s name is self explanatory. “Clear because we try to be transparent with what we say and do in our rhymes, Soul because we put as much soul in our music as possible, and Forces because we are aggressive with how we are in our songs, and on stage. All that together is what were about,” says the band via email. With Ilajide as the in-house producer, every track the group releases consists of mesmerizing beats, providing the perfect canvas to showcase the distinct personalities of each member through hard rhymes and powerful lyrics. CSF draws influence from all ends of the hip-hop spectrum, listing Outkast, 3 6 Mafia, Jay-Z, Little Brother, Black Milk and even Incubus in its bio.

In addition to Ilajide’s beat making, Clear Soul Forces’ determination to constantly evolve its sound frequently leads to bringing in outside producers. The message is clear and CSF’s music stands behind it. “There are still young MCs that have respect for hip-hop culture. And that good original music is still out there and very present in the hip-hop community.” CSF is definitely out to prove both of these statements and gaining a lot of recognition in the process. The group’s third project The Forces With You will be out this summer. Meanwhile, CSF has been keeping us busy with new exclusive content on its website, doing its best to keep up with the exponential growth of the group’s fan base.
