The soul music community has taken a slight hit with news of Sharon Jones’ (of Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings) recent stage-one bile duct cancer diagnosis. The group’s upcoming full-length, Give The People What They Want, was set to be released on August 6, but the record has been postponed while Jones undergoes treatment. Fortunately, the early discovery means the cancer is treatable and Sharon is “looking forward to getting back on the road.”
The soul singer from a seemingly forgotten era has released records with the Dap-Kings since 2002 almost exclusively on Daptone Records, a notoriously funk and soul indebted label. 2010′s successful LP, I Learned The Hard Way, earned the #2 spot on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart, and since then, we’ve been waiting in suspense for their next album to drop. Sharon would like her fans to know she is “down, but not out.” Hopefully this means we can look forward to a speedy recovery and new music in the not-too-distant future. Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I didn’t know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it’s operable and curable!
I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I’ll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!
