Music festivals can be a great way to experience new bands and enjoy old favorites, but with climbing ticket prices and increasingly commercialized rosters, it isn’t always worth the trouble. Luckily, there’s now an alternative: the Music Frees All Festival. The New York City festival will take place June 1, 2 and 3 at a different venue each night. The festival’s organizers packed the lineup with funk, Afrobeat, soul, hip-hop and reggae to get people bonding over booty-shaking.

“Live shows have so much impact on people, especially when dancing and getting down is involved,” festival organizer Miles Arntzen says to CMJ. He hand-selected the roster’s genres because all of them “at their core are about relaxing and being free.” Arntzen sees the festival becoming an annual event, if not happening twice a year. “This kind of a community-building festival doesn’t happen often enough,” he says, guaranteeing that Music Frees All will be around for years.

Ticket prices for each of the three nights never go above $10. “This isn’t no Bonnaroo,” Arntzen admits, “but music lovers will experience the same (if not greater) energy and talent, up-close and personal, for a substantially cheaper price.” All of the proceeds from the June 3 show, A Benefit For Scotty Hard, will go to the Scotty Hard Trust. The fund is for music producer and engineer Scott Harding, who was paralyzed below the chest after a car accident in 2008. Even if you can’t attend the concert, donations can be made to the trust on its website.
