Don’t be fooled by the vestigial “v” in Parlovr—pronounced “parlor”—when listening to “You Only Want It ‘Cause You’re Lonely.” This Montreal power trio’s economical new single from the upcoming Kook Soul (Dine Alone) is some of the tightest, crispest, no-nonsense-iest indie pop we’ve heard in a while. Singer/keyboardist Alex Cooper calls it a “retro futurist motif” inspired by ’50s rock and soul records, plus a dram of the the Flaming Lips’ Soft Bulletin. Grooving to the strolling guitar lead, Bon Iver-ish falsetto harmonies and 12-bar blues breakdown, we just call it awesome.
