After 13 years of making music as Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Owen Ashworth is making some changes. “My hearing isn’t what it used to be,” the Chicago troubadour said in an interview last year, “I’m happier playing quieter music these days. I bought a Rhodes.”
Performing as Advance Base, Ashworth will release his new project’s debut album A Shut-In’s Prayers on May 1 via Orindal (vinyl/digital) and Caldo Verde (CD).
Just as Ashworth’s new stage name borrows selectively from the 2009 Casiotone album Advance Base Battery Life, Advance Base’s sound is a new twist on existing elements. Fundamentally, he’s still making catchy two-to-three-minute pop tunes with keyboard kickers. But tonally, Ashworth has turned to softer, darker material more reliant on analog instruments. Take a listen to “Our Cat” below, which is a bittersweet jaunt perfectly befitting a carousel ride on a rainy day.
