California punk band Ceremony will release its fourth proper LP, Zoo, on March 6 via Matador. But if you’re itching for an early taste of the band’s elbow-slamming, sweat-dripping, stage-dive-dodging hardcore energy, Ceremony’s got you covered with a video for the howling standout track “World Blue.” Filmed at the band’s February 4 show at Le Poisson Rouge in downtown Manhattan, the video is a minute and 39 seconds of pure fury and bile. Director Robert Semmer uses split screens in a way that’s less seizure-inducing than another recent live footage video, and the grainy black-and-white photography gives the clip a “watching busted old punk VHS tapes in your cool uncle’s basement while sitting on a stack of slowly rotting fanzines” vibe. Check it out below.
Your intrepid reporter was in attendance at the show featured in the video, and I can confirm that it was as raucous and chaotic as it looks. I thought I saw Jonathan Franzen in the pit at one point, but it turns out it was just a dude who looked a lot like Jonathan Franzen. There were more dudes who looked like Jonathan Franzen than you would expect at a Ceremony show; take from that what you will.
