Get your white-out tape ready because the indie-rockers of the Morning Benders announced today that they will be changing their name to POP ETC. According to the band members, they encountered a lot of raised eyebrows when touring in Europe because “bender” is derogatory slang over there for a homosexual male.

In an official statement on its site, the band said, “We simply cannot go on using a name that is demeaning to the gay community. The reason we are making music is to reach and unite as many different kinds of people as possible, and the idea that our name may be hateful towards anyone makes us sick.” It seems like the name-change is signaling more than just the end of confusion abroad, though, as the band has just released a free mixtape as POP ETC, which marks quite a departure from its earlier work. Fans of the band will be surprised, nay shocked, to hear that drum machines, synthesizers and (gasp) Auto-Tune figure prominently on the mixtape as the band adopts a synth-pop, vaguely chillwave sound.
