It can be easy to forget that M. Ward is an accomplished solo artist. After all, the past few years have seen the Portland-based folk musician make up the “him” of sunny pop duo She And Him, in addition to helping craft an album as a member of indie supergroup Monsters Of Folk. However, M. Ward is back on his own again for his forthcoming album titled A Wasteland Companion , set to be released on April 10 via Merge.

The album’s first single, “Primitive Girl,” is available to stream on Soundcloud and to purchase on iTunes. The track immediately makes a striking impression with a rollicking piano riff that’s a perfect fit for the primitive girl M. Ward admires in the song. “I’d like to think I’m a primitive guy,” he sings at one point, making sure to tar himself with the same primitive brush.

M. Ward will tour to support the album in April and May. Tour dates and “Primitive Girl” are below.
