Indie pop staple The Dodos will be coming back with their newest album since 2011′s No Color on August 27 via their new label home, Polyvinyl. The new record, Carrier, has already teased fans with its first single Confidence back in May and today Rolling Stone premiered the album’s follow-up single, Substance.

The new track showcases The Dodos’ fine-tuned ear for catchy guitar melodies and introspective lyrics. Guitarist Meric Long sings “Words we never said/Do we really mean them/Someone give them to me now/Words that I can say but you never hear them” in a way that’s dripping with lament. An understated melancholy lies throughout the three-and-a-half-minute song possibly inspired by the sudden passing of guitarist Christopher Reimer last year, formerly of Women. A bounty of uplifting horns arise half-way through the track to create a dynamic grandeur leading into a beautiful guitar breakdown. Listen to Substance below.
