Listening to PHOX feels like diving directly into the dream of a lonely disaffected teenager, given that this particular teen feels comforted by a series of cryptic rhymes and hushed lullabies. The Baraboo, Wisconsin natives, who describe their hometown as “a place where kids often drink poisoned groundwater and become endowed mutants,” come with that feeling of camaraderie unique to a collective of grown-ups bound by their shared dislike for their place of origin. These residual feelings of distaste can be felt throughout their latest release, 1936, albeit suffused with beautiful harmonies and light noise pop reminiscent of Feist or Cat Power circa You Are Free.

This single, which is the first off their upcoming self-titled debut album set for release on June 24 via Partisan Records, is a stunning, promising introduction. Check out 1936, a live performance of the song and upcoming tour dates below.
