The multi-talented Colin Stetson is redefining the sound of the saxophone yet again on his new single “High Above A Grey Green Sea.” It’s a track off his upcoming album, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light, the final installment in his New History Warfare trilogy due out April 30 via Constellation.

When I first started listening to the track, I thought I had clicked on the wrong song, but soon Stetson’s sax becomes more recognizable, though no less powerful. The spooky song paints a haunting picture for the listener, making you feel lost and alone in a dark seemingly never ending forest, struggling to find your way back home. The low and high “ooh’s” and “aah’s” throughout the song compliment this eerie instrumental. Check it out below.

New History Warfare Vol 3: To See More Light was recorded in Montreal and mixed in Iceland with Australian composer Ben Frost. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon also contributed vocals to four of the songs. The album will be released on April 30, and Stetson is scheduled to go on a North American tour with renowned violinist Sarah Neufield this Spring.
