Lee Bains (a one-time CMJ intern, dontca know) did not come by roots rock via his bearded barber’s Pandora station suggestion. Bains grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, soaking up older sounds around him while also singing in a church choir, came to live in Brooklyn for a spell to hone his songwriting proclivities, but heard the siren call of the twang and cheaper rents of ‘bama once again, moved back, and finally formed his dream project, Lee Bains III And The Glory Fires. Their 2012 debut, There Is A Bomb In Gilead (Alive Naturalsound), was a modern re-stomp on the tried and true tricks of kicking through the woods and worrying about your woman, but with enough ragged production and energy (Bains also spent time in the punkier Dexatreens) to never devolve into “dad rock.” Aside from the solid songwriting, Bains and Co. toured like mad. All that has added up to Sub Pop nabbing them for their sophomore album, due later this year. For now the band is, of course, back on the road. Check their tour dates below.
