Lauryn Hill—almost universally loved on-record and loved/hated in equal parts live—has announced a new string of tour dates starting next week. While most of the contempt for her recent performances has been due to severe tardiness (forcing disgruntled audiences to wait for hours, which in turn led to her band members taping signs saying “I was on time” to their drumkits), Ms. Hill, as she now likes to be called, can certainly still thrash out glimmers of on-stage brilliance.
The new series of dates is housed under the title Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdates. While it includes stops at Miami’s In The Gardens Festival, Coachella and New Orleans’ Jazz And Heritage Festival, the tour also places Ms. Hill in smaller venues in what could be interpreted as a move to reconnect with her fans. As with her previous performances that saw Ms. Hill seemingly just riffing off the cuff, these shows will most likely have her experimenting with her solid back catalogue of Fugees material, as well as that one stellar solo album (and just quietly we’re hoping for a cut off the Sister Act 2 soundtrack too).
Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdates opens with Ms. Hill’s performance at the House Of Blues in Orlando, FL, next Wednesday, before travelling west to include a date in Hawaii and finishing up in New Orleans on May 7. Current dates are listed below, with more to be announced.
