Iggy Pop will be passing the ambassadorial torch of Record Store Day to Jack White. The internationally recognized day is devoted to independent music stores and the fans that support them and will be taking place this year on April 20.

“Jack White is a record store owner, a record label head, a record maker and a record consumer,” said Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day, in a statement today. “We can think of no better Ambassador for Record Store Day 2013 and are thrilled to have Jack White on board to celebrate the culture of the independent record store.”

The former White Stripes member sounds just as enthusiastic in the honorary ambassador announcement and wake-up call letter he wrote to fans. “As Record Day Ambassador of 2013,” White writes, “I’m proud to help in any way I can to invigorate whoever will listen with the idea there is beauty and romance in the act of visiting a record shop…” and then goes on to advise music fans that it’s up to us to “wake each other up” to that idea.

While you usually don’t call your listeners lazy in a pep talk, you can see his point. The music industry has changed so much because of the technological innovations of this decade that a large portion of young people don’t get the whole record store thing. So go on and take one of these whippersnappers to a local shop this April and teach them to respect their elders and their vinyl collections.
