Oberhofer, the eponymous project of Tacoma-born and Brooklyn-based songwriter Brad Oberhofer, will release its debut LP, Time Capsules II, on March 27 via Glassnote. Working with famed producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band), the group recorded the record this fall in Brooklyn after signing with Glassnote, home to crossover stalwarts like Mumford And Sons and Phoenix. The band will take its new songs on an extensive North American tour this spring, including a stop at Coachella.

Back in March, CMJ talked to the 21-year-old musician, and he had this to say: “Before you make something public to the world, it’s important to perfect it. And we’re not signed because we’re not ready yet. I think even six months from now, if we’re finally signed to a label, our style will be even more perfected, our performance will be more perfected, my songwriting style will be more perfected, and it will be better.”

Listening to “HEART,” the ambitious opener of the album, you get a sense of the perfection Oberhofer is aiming for. Expanding on the guitar-driven pop template of his early singles, Oberhofer has created a yearning, swing-for-the-fences piece of orchestral art-rock complete with swirling pianos, swelling strings, twinkling harps and a hushed breakdown where the singer whispers in an Avey Tare-ish lilt, “All that I asked for was a little bit of heart/I gave you my love and you tore it apart.”

Heavy stuff. And listen for those little breaths in between the militaristic drum fills around 1:55 in the song—that’s the sound of a perfectionist hard at work.
