Warm, fuzzy (and Super Furry) singer/songwriter Gruff Rhys will release his third solo album, Hotel Shampoo, on May 3 via Wichita Recordings. The Welsh-born artist employs a number of styles in his third installment, from mariachi to ’60s pop on “Shark Ridden Waters,” which was released as the first single.
Named after Rhys’s collection of free products from his accommodations while touring, Hotel Shampoo covers topics such as discovering music, eco-politics and inequality, with Rhys playing most of the instruments himself. The album is another step forward for Rhys, after his 2007 release Candylion was praised as being more realized than his 2005 Welsh language solo debut Yr Atal Genhedlaeth.
In support of the album, Rhys created an art installation of a hotel comprised of his collection of free goods from hotel bathrooms throughout the years, in which he spent the night. The work is currently on display at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, CA. Rhys has also released videos for “Sensations In The Dark” and “Shark Ridden Waters.”
Rhys is currently touring Europe and the UK and will announce North American dates soon.
