The iconic Grace Jones, who has been musically dormant for the past 22 years, is finally releasing the new album Hurricane in the U.S. on September 6 (the record saw U.K. and EU releases in 2009). The special double-disc edition includes a bonus disc dub version of the entire album.
Jones has certainly made her mark on the world in the last 35 years. You may know her from her disco music, as a Bond girl or as this person in Conan The Destroyer. Hurricane, penned as Jones was nearing 60, is a remarkable effort from the pop songstress. The album became an instant hit overseas when it was released two years ago and features incredible artists like Brian Eno, Sky And Robbie and Tricky. Hurricane is a combination of poppy dance mixes as well as trippy ambient tracks. The video for her epic, New Wave single “Corporate Cannibal” (directed by Nick Hooker) is especially choice, putting Lady GaGa to shame in its overall weirdness.
Currently, Jones doesn’t have any shows scheduled stateside. However, in 2009 she collaborated with Academy Award-winning costume designer Eiko Ishioka (Dracula, The Cell) for her show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. So, when she does inevitably go on a North American tour you can expect an over-the-top production. Download the song “Sunrise Sunset” from the new LP here or stream it below.
