Pianist Aaron Goldberg and composer-arranger Guillermo Klein will collaborate on Bienestan, a new collection of reinterpreted jazz standards among Klein’s original works. The album, to be released June 14 via Sunnyside, includes covers of Charlie Parker’s “Moose The Mooche” and well-known Brazilian piece “Manha De Carnaval,” as well as Goldberg and Klein duets.
Under an album title that means “a place of well-being,” Bienestan was created by a partnership that began in the early ’90s when Goldberg and Klein were college students in the Boston area. Goldberg began playing piano in Klein’s Big Van band and continued to do so when they both moved to New York. This album sees Klein return to the keyboard to accompany Goldberg’s acoustic piano for “Airport Fugue” and “Implacable,” while adding bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, alto sax player Miguel Zenón and tenor sax player Chris Cheek on others.
The duo’s collaboration follows up Klein’s 2010 release, Domador De Huellas: Music Of “Cuchi” Leguizamon and Goldberg’s trio recording Home, both of which earned critical acclaim.
