Iconic industrial and new wave trailblazer Gary Numan has announced plans to release a new album October 24. On the self-released LP, titled Dead Son Rising, Numan teamed with keyboardist Ade Fenton as co-writer and producer. Numan is known to be a master of redeveloping his sound, as evidenced by his early punk days in the ’70s, his new wave ’80s hit “Cars” and later on his move into more industrial sounds that inspired the likes of Trent Reznor and Marilyn Mason. His latest is expected to have a slightly different, more exploratory vibe.

Though the inspiration behind Dead Son Rising was a collection of demos from some of Numan’s previous efforts, don’t expect a rehashing of old ideas. Numan explains, in a press release, that “the original ideas behind these songs are now barely visible” and that “the album has grown into another animal, something more experimental and fluid.”

And if that isn’t clear, here is what you might expect from the new album: a tracklist ranging from instrumentals to more ghostly sounds, and even to some cinematic, soundtrack material that Numan and Fenton have been focusing on. Themes like troubled relationships will be explored, as well as Numan’s signature science-fiction elements emerging from a fantasy story he has been creating.

The title track—an ominous, heavy tune worthy of Numan’s signature look of jet-black hair and matching eyeliner—is streaming on his website and can be found below. Time to get a little dark and deep.

Numan is preparing a U.K. tour to support the album, as he continues to work on his forthcoming 2012 release, Splinter. The tour will take place in September and December. Supporting him onstage will be Fenton and David Brooks on keyboards, Richard Beasley on drums, Steve Harris on guitar and Tim Muddiman on bass. After celebrating his 50th birthday during last year’s 30th anniversary tour of The Pleasure Principle, Numan still has plenty to offer. Bring on the Numanoids.
