Former Gowns member and critically acclaimed “Next Big Thing” EMA hits the road this July for a North American tour to promote her debut album, Past Life Martyred Saints, which dropped on Souterrain Transmissions last week.

Listening to EMA’s Past Life Martyred Saints, it’s easy to understand all the hype. EMA, or Erika M. Anderson, is a welcome throwback to all of the best parts of the early ’90s. Her breathy voice, moody lyrics and deliciously dark chord progressions are reminiscent of everything that was ever good about Courtney Love. The music video for “Milkman,” directed by artist William Rahilly, is a delightfully strange art romp that led one blogger to call EMA indie rock’s Lady Gaga.
