Aussie performers—and CMJ 2011 artists—Boy And Bear and Gotye have rounded up 14 nominations between them for the ARIA Awards, the Australian version of the Grammys. Boy And Bear is up for Best Adult Alternative Album, Breakthrough Artist – Single, Breakthrough Artist – Album, Single Of The Year for its song “Feeding Line,” Best Group, Album Of The Year and Producer Of The Year. Goyte’s album Making Mirrors came out too late to be in the running, meaning the seven nominations come on the strength of just one single, “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
Gotye, or Wally De Backer, is nominated for the Highest Selling Single, Single Of The Year, Best Pop Release and Best Male Artist categories. He also up for Best Video (Natasha Pincus for Starkraving Productions), Engineer Of The Year (Francois Tetaz) and Producer Of The Year in the ARIA Artisan categories. Given his Hugh Jackman-like status in Australia, it’s safe to say he’ll bring at least a few of those seven awards home. Time for Mr. De Backer to go to Ikea and get some new shelves.
Boy And Bear plays Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, October 19, NYU Kimmel Center on Thursday, October 20, and the Puma Store and Union Hall on Friday, October 21, as part of CMJ 2011, while Gotye plays Cantora Labs’ Smartlounge on Thursday, October 20, and Santos Party House and Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, October 22.
