Bassekou Kouyate And Ngoni Ba had a CMJ New World-topping album, I Speak Fula, in 2010. And Jama Ko, his Howard Bilerman-produced (Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolf Parade) album released this past April, hit No. 2. Now, the Malian singer and his ngoni (a West African string instrument) are plotting a North American tour that will continue through 2014.
Yeah, Bassekou Kouyate has a Grammy nod under his belt, and he’s shared the stage with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones and Blur Afrophile Damon Albarn, but it’s his skilled calls for peace and intricate stringwork that are the real draw.
