Primavera Sound started with rain—very strange for a city like Barcelona. While walking around and getting our festival bearings on the first day, there were interesting free shows scattered about the city. We started the afternoon at The Forum with Temples, then a heavy rainstorm started and the crowd dispersed to find a roof to hide under.
The bands following Temples had to wait to play, dampening the action of the pre-festival afternoon fun. Once the showers stalled, Stromae hit the stage with a full set-up of electronic beats and kooky choreography. The crowd embraced him with a ton of energy. Sky Ferreira was next, with fans screaming “I love you!”. Maybe something was lost in translation/pronunciation, but she heard “Fuck you,” and her face was kind of shocked. The rain came back for Holy Ghost, so we decided to go to another show in another part of the city. Brian Jonestown Massacre was playing at the very packed Apolo. The lines were insane, maybe three blocks full of people lining up to see them. It was a great show, and the fans (at least those who got in) went wild!
