Having witnessed an-all too brief set by New Zealand upstarts, Ghost Wave, earlier in the day at Pianos, I found it necessary to get another taste of the band’s live set. This showcase organized by the New Zealand Music Commission (not to be confused with the New Zealand consulate) was running on schedule, so the band was afforded more time to run through cuts from its superb debut on the reinvigorated Flying Nun label. At times reminiscent of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and at others recalling Kiwi luminaries like the Verlaines, Ghost Wave balanced melody and noise amongst waves of reverb. Other excellent Kiwi acts included New York City transplants and folk revivalist Streets Of Laredo and the fuzzed-out post-pop Black City Lights.
