Tuesday night, Brooklyn’s own Landlady closed out a three-night April residency at Shea Stadium in support of their forthcoming album, Upright Behavior. Opening acts, Relatives and the Westerlies, prepped the crowd with feel-good, soft-around-the-edges guitar music, embellished by a five-piece horn section in the second half of Relatives’ set.
 
Upon starting their 11 p.m. set, Landlady frontman Adam Schatz called out individuals to fill in the empty space separating the stage and the crowd. At this point in this residency, the group knew how to work a crowd in the intimate, dimly-lit venue, how to get the audience full engaged with their ebullient, spiritual music. The five members kicked off the set with a slow number, a goosebumpy a capella arrangement that echoed painfully through the venue. The remainder of their set was anything but slow, especially with two percussionist working strenuously to advance the languid rhythms of each subsequent number.
 
Schatz was a remarkable performer, throwing his whole body into songs like Above My Ground and The Globe, using his hands to grab at some magical energy floating through the air. For their final song, Landlady was joined by a number of brass and woodwind players who blared and squawked triumphant gold tones from the crowd.
