Shortly after midnight on the last night in June, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard played their last, woozy, U.S. show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn following a whirlwind two-month tour. If you haven’t already caught on to the King Gizzard phenomenon, you should know that the hyper-prolific Aussie garage-psych band is made up of seven rad, multi-talented dudes including a thereminist, harmonica player, bassist, two drummers, two guitarists and several vocalists. They have already released four full albums and several EPs in the past two years and plan to release a new album later this year, as well as reissues of their last two albums via American Recordings.
The show warmed up with DJ Alix Brown who spun fuzzy rock jams as the various ‘ards set up the stage while party-goers trickled in. The crowd was a mix of scuzzy, baseball cap-sporting skateboarders, several local fashion designers in flowy dresses and young Brooklynites swaying around to the music. At around 12:30, the band opened with one of their newest tracks, Cellophane, a psychedelic jam with infectious guitar riffs that swerved the audience into head-banging mode. By the time King Gizzard swung into their stretched-out psych anthem, Head On/Pill, kids were crashing up to the stage in heavy, sweaty waves, reacting in unison to the twangy reverbology.
As might be expected from a band reaching the end of a non-stop international tour, King Gizzard seemed slightly more subdued than usual. They limited their interaction with the audience to sporadic muttering from frontman Stu: “We don’t know how to play…I think this is our 29th time playing…I hate myself,” etc. The self-deprecating rambling was met with a strange juxtaposition of awkward laughter and cheering. Happily, the band plans to lay low and recuperate at home in Australia for the rest of the summer before what is sure to be a hectic year for them.
