Something quite like an arena rock concert occurred late Wednesday night at Bowery Poetry Club. Yes, at the Poetry Club. Tokyo electronic-rock group Boom Boom Satellites lit up the stage with strobe lights, and emerged from a cloud of smoke (as any true rock stars do) to an astonishingly huge mob of fans. From the first beats of the synthesizer and slam on the drum, the audience was hooked, jumping and grooving with joyful style. Some were even driven to passionately scream, “they’re fuckin’ awesome!” Each member is hypnotizing to watch move about as they master each instrument and the trance-y music blasting complements the physical appeal of their performance perfectly. For a band that has been so well known in Japan and heard in film scores, it’s great to see they are taking over America live at this year’s Marathon.
