On Tuesday night, up-and-coming synth-pop diva Betty Who (Jessica Anne Newham) played an intimate sold-out show at Los Angeles’s Echo. Even in the small venue though, Newham performed like she was playing to an arena. The Echo usually has the stage dimly lit, but Betty was bathed in neon and LED lights as she and her band sported “BW” letterman jackets. Although her bandmates’ jackets were black, Newham’s was sparkling gold with a cartoon of her smoking a cigarette on the back. The set featured all the songs off her current and upcoming EPs as well as an epic cover of the Spice Girls’ Say You’ll Be There.
During that tribute for all the ’90s kids in the house, Newham’s friends Kevin McHale (not the basketball coach, the Kevin McHale that plays Artie on Glee) and Telly Kousakis joined her on stage as backup dancers. Everyone laughed as Kevin and Telly grinded on Betty and gyrated on stage. During the encore while performing her hit single Somebody Loves You, the audience was surprised when foam came raining from the ceiling! Cotton candy would’ve made more sense, but it was fun anyway.
