This weekend, Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn looked the best it’s ever looked—at least, it did if you’re not so into the wide-open-spaces and room-to-roam thing. Thousands of people gathered to witness the music extravaganza that is Afropunk Fest—and everyone looked good while doing it.
Among those looking good on Saturday were Le1f
, whose spindly dance moves are even better in person (like, he does this really amazing weird limbo thing you have to see to believe) Mykki Blanco
, who could be seen strutting around in the crowd (standing at approximately 11 feet tall), Rye Rye
, whose sultry popper vocals and quick beats were responsible for the birth of more than one dance pit in the crowd, and a never-disappointing Saul Williams
, who got introspective. After much hype and speculation that Prince was coming (in my dreams), Saturday’s special guests turned out to be Dead Prez
, which was pretty cool too.
Sunday featured hard-hitters like Danny Brown
, clearly riding an album pre-release high, Pyyramids
leaning toward the “punk” end of the spectrum, and Questlove
, well, being Questlove.
