Want to intern with CMJ?

CMJ Network, best new music specialists via web, print magazine, weekly college and independent radio charts and the annual CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival, is looking for winter/spring 2012 interns. All interns will receive hands-on experience and the opportunity to build up their portfolio, make contacts and glean an understanding of the music industry that you wouldn’t get sitting inside a classroom. We expect our interns to show initiative and regularly pitch new ideas to staff members.

All internships are unpaid, and must be used for academic credit. We ask for a minimum commitment of two full days per week from our office in midtown Manhattan. Qualifying interns will receive a full badge to CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival 2012.

Editorial Intern

What’s it like to work with us?

For one, when you work here, you won’t be going on coffee runs—that is, unless you’re in need of a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. You’ll spend the overwhelming majority of your day reporting and writing the news posts, reviews and features that you see on CMJ.com. You’ll come out of the experience with a better ability to hammer out a story on a dime and, not to mention, enough writing clips to bury potential future employers under an avalanche of 8×11 printouts.

You’ll get to rub shoulders with folks in the music industry, find out which labels have the nicest publicists, and get your name on the guest list for concerts that you’d like to review. And you’ll get free music. Lots of free music.

(The above was written by one of our previous interns, so you know we’re not joking.)

Duties include:
* Writing daily news, features, album reviews and live reviews
* Transcribing interviews
* Creating and pitching story ideas to the editorial staff
* Assisting with CMJ’s weekly radio charts
* Covering CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival by way of on site interviews and event reviews
* Interns must be willing to attend and review after-hours concerts and events for the semester

Interns must bring their own laptop.

To apply: Please email your cover letter, resume, top five albums of 2011 and three clips to Lisa Hresko at lhresko@cmj.com with the subject line ‘Editorial Internship’ by April 10.

Graphic Design Intern

Graphic design interns will work closely with the Art Director to develop collateral for the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival and our editorial department. Creativity is encouraged and all individual talents will be considered for specialty projects.

Duties include:
* Laying out our weekly digital magazine
* Putting together our daily email newsletter
* Creating and resizing web banners and print ads
* Assisting in laying out our bi-monthly print magazine
* Maintaining our website

Requirements:
* Strong knowledge of Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator
* Basic web skills required (Dreamweaver and HTML). Knowledge of WordPress, CSS, Javascript and PHP a plus.
* Must be organized and have a strong eye for detail

To apply: Please email your cover letter, resume and link to online portfolio (preferred) or PDF portfolio to jphillips@cmj.com with the subject line “Graphic Design Intern”.
