SXSW, the annual music industry swan-dive into a flaming hot Texas BBQ pit of hungry young artists, attention-starved legacy acts and stuffed tech-bros sending tweets, is already underway. Maybe you’re already posted up in line for a free-drink-filled day show, maybe you’re hiding out in the shade of a taco truck trying to score some free wi-fi, or maybe you’re sitting at a desk in some non-Austin location, dreaming of the Texas sun. Or maybe you’re like, “Shut up and get to the playlist already.” OK, jeez. We’re just trying to set the mood.

At 20 tracks, this is by no means a definitive or all-encompassing playlist, but it does serve as a friendly, manageable sampler platter that gives you a taste of what’s going on in Texas this week. We’ve put together an eclectic mix of 2012 CMJ Marathon favorites (the Orwells, Sky Ferreira, Mac DeMarco), hip-hop innovators (Antwon, Mykki Blanco), metal gods (Pinkish Black, Royal Thunder) and intriguing newcomers (Emma Louise, Haerts). Here’s what they all have in common: You don’t have to be in Texas to hear them. So get streaming, below.
