Paul McCartney – “Wonderful Christmas Time”
I hate that song. If you changed the words to it and made it a song not about Christmas, I think I’d still hate it. There’s something about the melody of that song that drives me insane.
Elmo And Patsy – “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”
That’s a pretty good one. I could see Deer Tick covering that one. That was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I thought that was so funny.
So you’re drawn to the darker or more cynical Christmas songs?
Yeah, definitely. Kinda like that song that I wrote “Christmas At A Chinese Restaurant.” I wrote that because I wanted to join that club of holiday writers.
“12 Days Of Christmas”
I had to sing that every Christmas when I was in school, and I hated it.
Yeah, it’s really repetitive.
One year when I was in school, I wanted to be one of the geese-a-laying, but they gave me one of the stupid ones. ‘Cause if I got to do that one, I’d get to mimic laying an egg, which would’ve been the most entertaining thing I could’ve gotten out of performing that song. But I got stuck holding up a fucking golden ring or something.
The Kinks – “Father Christmas”
I love that song. That’s a great Christmas song. I love it when it gets mixed up with all the goofy, stupid holiday music when it comes on the radio. It’s a small victory when you’re walking through a mall or something and you have to listen to all this terrible music.
Run DMC – “Christmas In Hollis”
I love that one, especially the video. I think I posted that on our Facebook over the summer. I get really into Christmas stuff in the summer time too. I don’t know why.
Just wishing it was Christmas?
I have no idea. All the Christmas songs I’ve written, I’ve written in the summer. I can’t explain it, but it’s just what happens.
Wham! – “Last Christmas”
Yeah, I change the radio station with that one. That was a demo song on the first keyboard that my parents gave me. I didn’t actually learn how to play it, but I really liked it without the words. Then a few years later I learned it was a Christmas song and started to really hate it.
Band Aid – “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
I guess that’s an all right one.
What modern artists would you like to see write Christmas songs?
If Paul Westerberg did a Christmas album, that’d probably be pretty cool. J Roddy Walston And The Business could make a pretty good Christmas album too. It’d be an interesting experiment for a number of bands, but those two are the only ones popping into my head right now.
Bing Crosby – “White Christmas”
I like that one a lot because it reminds me of the after shave scene in Home Alone.
