Good news, artists: There’s still time to apply to play CMJ 2013. However, the deadline is creeping up on us like the summer of cicadas. (Luckily, both CMJ and the insects of swarmagaddon specialize in the best new music.) But while the songs of our six-legged friends peter out with the summer heat, CMJ hosts the longest-running industry event of its kind in October: five days of non-stop music, industry panels, parties and more.
Since we receive many inquiries about how to get on the bill, we tapped CMJ showcase booker Matt McDonald for the facts—and some insider tips—about the application process.
When is the deadline?
June 26 at 11:59PM EDT.
How do I apply?
Head to Sonicbids and submit your EPK.
Do I have to use Sonicbids?
What should I include in my EPK?
At least your two best songs, plus a short bio, touring history, germane press and any career highlights.
When will I hear if I have been accepted?
We’ll let everyone know on or before August 16, so please be patient.
Who listens to my submitted music?
CMJ’s showcase braintrust.
No, who really does?
Really, CMJ’s showcase department actually listens to every single submission.
Will the deadline be extended?
Not this year. Soooooo tick tock!
How many bands will you accept?
We expect to end up with about 1400 showcasing acts this year.
Do I need to have appeared on CMJ’s college radio charts to be accepted?
No, but it doesn’t hurt.
Do I need to have played CMJ before to get accepted?
No, we love new artists.
Any other hot tips on what makes a good submission?
Music is the most important factor, followed by a coherent picture of where you are in your career. If we like the music, but it looks like you’ve only played one show, at your cousin Randy’s Phoenix garage, we’ll probably wait until you’ve had a chance to build some better awareness.
