In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week, Hang Time‘s Will Sartain gives the scoop on Salt Lake City, UT. The band’s new self-titled album comes out March 5 on Kilby.


 

 
Salt Lake City is a great place to live. Rent is cheap and practice spaces plentiful. Positively Fourth Street music studios houses over 50 practice spaces with about 100 bands. I was deeply influenced by the community feel at the practice space growing up. I remember playing in an indie-pop band but making friends with other bands who played dance music or loud rock or folk. It is a small city, and everybody knows everybody. One thing about SLC that surprises people is how much there is going on. On any given night, there is a great local band playing, an art show or various city-sponsored events like the free shows every Thursday during the summer. Last year featured acts included Beach House, My Morning Jacket and Common.
