Vundabar

In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week, Vundabar gives us the scoop on Boston, MA and the surrounding area. Their debut LP, Antics, is out now.

The music scene of Boston is ever-changing. Between the vast number of college kids that filter in and out of the city every year and the Tom & Jerry-esque struggle (Joe Sly anyone?) between DIY spaces/promoters and the Boston police, things never stay the same for too long. Bands are constantly forming and breaking up, and spaces are constantly getting set up or shut down.

As far as the type of music getting made here goes, it seems to be reflective of the the place itself. The Massachusetts winter is an all-enveloping ordeal which always lasts longer than seems possible. It’s greyness and rawness is ever-present, and this environment makes it a good place for emotional and introspective music, while maintaing a somewhat brash delivery, which is an inherently Bostonian attribute. This sound can be heard in some of the bands that are adored around the city such as Krill, Pile, Grass Is Green, Speedy Ortiz and Kal Marks, who have all been on the great label Exploding In Sound at one point or another.
