In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Jesse Elliott of These United States gives the scoop on Chicago, IL.
I grew up on every side of Chicago–Grand Rapids, MI, Fort Wayne, IN, and Elgin, IL–so for me it was always “the City.” Overwhelming, dangerous, totally enthralling. I still feel like a wide-eyed kid there in a way that I don’t in bigger places that I know much better, like New York or London or Mexico City. So I’m about as un-hip a correspondent as you could could ask for when it comes to describing the scene–and who could possibly get their narrow mind around such a massive, diverse, historic musical landscape as the Windy City’s, anyway? I’ll just tell you what makes me feel like a kid again.
