In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Slam Dunk gives the scoop on Victoria, BC.

Since Victoria is on an island, and it’s in Canada, and it’s mostly full of tourists and old people, it’s sometimes surprising there are any scenes at all. As for our friends, the recent addition of dial-up Internet has brought about a lot of changes, though we don’t really have enough bandwidth to become the next music coolies.

A lot of artists set on “making it” from Victoria usually move to Montreal and leave behind nonchalant attitudes and people who hate cold weather. This means that there are a ton of really amazing bands that go almost unheard. Smaller numbers of musician’s also means you see a lot of genres coming together for shows, which is fun! If you’re looking for an expansive and consistently evolving music scene, then Victoria might make you frustrated at times, but if you want to see a pile of goofs fill a basement and sing along to songs you will never hear again in your life, then come on over! We have lakes!
