In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Lantern gives the scoop on Philadelphia, PA.
The music of Philadelphia sort of seems a lot like the design of the city: vast and sprawling with many micro scenes and lots of surprises. With the influx of students and the amount of old warehouses and lofts available there always seems to be an abundance of DIY and house venues. This is also a bonus if you are a band because it is easy and cheap to find a nice place to rehearse.
There are also quite a few great organizations that bring some interesting musical programming to Philadelphia. For instance, Ars Nova and Bowerbird bring in a lot of national and international jazz and avant-garde music, while R5 Productions usually brings in the most acclaimed independent acts. For film it is always great to check out what’s playing at the International House, as they curate some very interesting collections. You are bound to discover something new, and it’s very friendly to your pocketbook.
