In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week CMJ 2012 Nir Shoshani of Punch Music gives the scoop on Tel Aviv, Israel. Shoshani is an artist and the A&R for Punch Music, Israel. He lives in the sunny city Tel Aviv, located on the beach of the Mediterranean sea. He has been working in the local and the international music scene since 1997.
The electronic music scene in Israel is very big. There are 7 million people in the whole country, and about 600,000 attend outdoor parties, clubs and dance bars on a regular basis. Trance is usually the most popular genre, but lately house and techno are getting bigger and better crowds. On a regular week we have four to six international DJs playing in Tel Aviv with the local acts. The dubstep and EDM scene is small but still vibrant. Since Israel is a very hot place, there are lots of outdoor bars, and one of the newest trends is bars that broadcast live streaming radio with lots of DJs and musicians contributing.
