In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Paul from PS I Love You gives the scoop on Kingston, Ontario.
PS I Love You is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Kingston is a small city with a big university (Queen’s), eight federal prisons and a huge military college. In short, I guess it’s kind of a weird place full of weird people. Musically there are several mini-scenes that have their small devotees and players. There’s a thriving bar-rock scene with poppy alt-rock original bands and classic rock (cover groups who probably have the most fans, srsly). There’s a lot of folk/country/bluegrass types having hootenannies and square dances every week. And then there’s the scene that birthed PS I Love You.
This is the small, weird rock and noise scene that contains people who love to have noise jams and people who love to rock out but not in any conventional sense of the term. I love this crowd because we all really like to drink beers and talk about guitar pedals. Also, I should mention that Canada’s biggest stadium-jamming rock band, the Tragically Hip, calls Kingston home. Anyway, here’s a list of Kingston bands that I think are worth checking out.
