Bands Worth Watching

Manray

Mathy punk/hardcore/metal that has a foot to the floorboard the entire time. Made up of the Oliveras (Ryan, Jordan and Derek) and Bit Brigade/Cinemechanica/Caledonia Lounge owner Bryant Williamson, these dudes played the best set of AthFest 2012. Amazing musicianship all around.

Easter Island

Dreamy vocals and guitars over a killer rhythm section. Post-rock elements give their songs grand arrangements. Ethan and Asher Payne front the band, on guitar and keys respectively. Nate Thompson plays lead. Ryan Monahan and Patrick Ferguson are the pounding heart of the group on bass and drums.

Velveteen Pink

Funky dudes. Combining all of the best parts of the late ’70s/early ’80s R&B, they are an amazing dance party. There’s a keytar. They normally all wear white and have a big pink drumset. There’s vocoder. Nicholas Robbins, Stanley Walker, Alfredo Lapuz Jr, Benjamin Williams create a stupid racket that is ripe for a damn good time.

I Come To Shanghai

Athens via Oakland electronic duo, Sam Frigard and Robert Ashley. This is a track from their most recent album Eternal Life, Vol. 2. That record blew me away—every tone, every word, every movement seems so convinced of itself. It’s perfectly dark and hypnotic and then the sand spills out from the hourglass.
